Yamunotri

Yamunotri is a sacred pilgrimage site located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, India. It is one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage destinations and the source of the holy Yamuna River. Situated at an altitude of approximately 3,293 meters (10,804 feet), it is surrounded by the majestic Garhwal Himalayas.

The Yamunotri Temple, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, is the main attraction. Pilgrims visit the temple to seek blessings and offer prayers. The temple was originally built by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal and holds great spiritual significance for Hindus.

A popular ritual is cooking rice and potatoes in the Surya Kund, a natural hot spring near the temple, which is offered to the deity. The nearby Divya Shila, a sacred rock pillar, is also worshipped before entering the temple.

The journey to Yamunotri involves a trek of about 6 kilometers from Janki Chatti, which is accessible by road. The route offers breathtaking views of snow-covered peaks, dense forests, and serene landscapes.

Yamunotri opens to pilgrims in May and closes after Diwali due to heavy snowfall. It is not only a place of religious importance but also a destination for nature lovers seeking peace and adventure.

Best Time to Visit

May to June and September to November are the periods apt for a visit. At 3,235 meters snowfall is imminent and heavy in winters. Even rainfall is heavy with frequent landslides. Couples can enjoy the cold during rains with the misty environs and game for risks.

May The temple is open now and the snow starts to melt and plants breathe much better. There is much plant activity and flower-buds appear within no time.

June is one of the best months to visit Yamunotri as the cold has disappeared totally and the whole day appears inviting with open arms.

July The weather is very good and skies clear for most parts of the day, but unexpected rains may cause a landslide. Rains seldom continue for long and mostly appear in short bursts.

August The weather is warm now but occasional rainfall can cause disruption on your trip. Landslides are common here and as far as possible, any tour should be avoided.

September The temperature starts to dip during the day. Normally the days are pleasant and nights are moderately cold. This weather is neither too cold nor too hot and can be tolerated by almost anyone and hence, the footfalls increase tremendously.

October Now, weather is really cold with chilly nights, yet October is the best time for visiting Yamunotri. The crowds are almost negligible as most people fear the chill factor and skip arriving here.

November, December, January, February, March, April  At over 3,000 meters, this period sees freezing cold coupled with heavy snowfall. The weather is extremely cold and frost bites are common. The Yamunotri temple is closed during this period. The shrine area wears a deserted look and all activities come to a standstill.
