Chopta

Known as the mini Switzerland its popularity is on the rise year after year. Located at an altitude of 2,700 m in Rudraprayag District of Uttarakhand, it is surrounded by dense forest and offers majestic views of the snowcapped Himalayan ranges and lush green meadows. It is easily accessible as it is located on the road connecting Gopeshwar with Guptakashi.

Chopta is also the starting point for the trek to famous Tungnath Temple (Panch Kedar Temple) and Chandrashila Summit. It occupies a height of 3,600 meters and the trek can be completed without any guide. This region is rich in varied flora and fauna and almost overwhelmed by Rhododendron and Deodar trees all around the hills.

Chopta serves as a great place for adventure buffs and trekking enthusiasts because it is a very popular activity in this valley. While trekking, the tourists can also take a similar trek to the nearby Deoria Tal, a famous destination which is surrounded entirely by forests on all sides. Just lying under the Chaukhumba Peak, it will be better if the tourist hires a guide to arrive here.

How to reach

Best Time to Visit

Chopta is an all year round tourist destination. However if pilgrimage to Tungnath is your aim, visit between April to November when it is open.

Depending on what your aim is, you can choose your period between summers, winters or rainy season.

Summers

Chopta is lucky to have salubrious and pleasing weather in summers. The mild breeze clears the mist thereby making the Himalayas distinctly visible. The sun brings mild warmth during the day yet the evenings and nights are cold. Light woolens are a must in this climate too.

Monsoon

The mild drizzle washes the greens and the shining leaves transform the views tourists cannot forget. This welcome remains etched deep in the tourists’ mind and they easily get lost into the wilderness of nature. Landslides may block some roads and movements may come to a standstill. Even then the scenic beauty during monsoons is worth taking the risk. Lazing out with a cup of tea and browsing the snowcapped peaks is the favourite pastime. Raincoats are recommended as they make life easy.

Winters

Chopta turns into a mini Switzerland when snowfall takes over the entire mountains. Serenity and quiet solitude are their best during winters. Tourists just love the overall view and they trickle in during these chilly months. Chopta freezes in winters and heavy woolens are always recommended
