Lamyuru Monastery is believed to be built on a place where originally a lake stood. It was constructed with the structure of five buildings, however, of which only the central hall is left and rest stands as ruins. Legends believe that in 11th century, a Buddhist Saint, Mahasiddhacharya Naropa meditated on this site. The monastery also houses a small temple dedicated to Avalokiteshwara, the manifestation of the compassion of all Buddhas. Many Buddhist and Kashmiri artefacts are the major attraction of this site.
It looks less like lake and more like white clouds flowing like water. Surrounded by snow covered mountains on all sides, Tsogmo Lake is filled with water from the snow melting from mountains. It also holds religious importance for the inhabitants and is worshipped on all occasions. This area is one of the oldest routes of India-China and thereby the security of this area is always at peak. Any tourist requires a permit to visit this place which can be easily attained by Travel agent/ Tourism Department/ Police.
Built in 1909, Enchey Monastery is the oldest monastery and the only one at that time, like the meaning of its name ‘Solitary Temple’, in Gangtok. It is believed through legends that this monastery is resided by Khangchendzonga and Yabdean, who are the protecting deities of this place. In the reign of Sikyong Tulku, this monastery was rebuilt in the shape of Chinese Pagoda.
It is performed by monks on the 18th and 19th day of the 12th month of lunar calendar at Enchey Monastery.
This is celebrated two days prior to the Tibetan New year which falls on the 10th day of the 5th month of Tibetan Calender. It presents the eight manifestations of Padmasambhava, performed at Rumtek Monastery.
Performed on the 28th and 29th day of the Tibetan Calendar, Kagyat Dance is a comic relief provided by jesters.
