The special characteristics of Shola forests and the Mathikettan region, makes it an important elephant corridor. Tourists are fascinated by the sight of movement of large herd of elephants visiting Mathikettan shola from the Munnar Division. The fauna comprises tigers, panthers, flying squirrels, spotted deers, wild elephants, giant grizzled squirrel, Nilgiritahrs. Snakes like king cobras, pythons, vipers and rat snakes are quite prominent here.
Nedumkandam is located in between the Periyar Tiger reserve/Thekkady and the popular hill station of Munnar. Most of the inhabitants in this area are migratory farmers, who migrated to the area between 1960 s and 1980s from central Travancore areas of Kottayam, Palai, Kothamangalam and Muvattupuzha for fertile land. Nedumkandam is superb place, popular for spices and pepper production. Over the years, the town has turned into a tourist hub, and this is adding to its economy on larger scale.
