Srinagar

Srinagar is named as the Paradise on Earth and it literally is with picturesque beauty. Also known as the Venice of East or the Kashmiri Venice, Srinagar is the most beautiful city located on the banks of Jhelum River, a tributary of Indus River. The city is divided into two parts which is connected by nine bridges.

The two major peaks of the city, Hari Parbat and Shankra Acharya Hills are located in the two different parts. Famous for its gardens, lakes, hills, houseboats, handicrafts etc.Srinagar is a unique blend of cultural diversity embracing all cultures and religions. Tourists can find temples, mosques, churches and gurudwaras, all in this city. The best time to visit this place is between the months of April to June. Winters receive heavy snowfall and thus are not a good time to visit Srinagar.

Events/Festivals

Navroz Festival

Navroz festival is celebrated by Shia Muslims where they gather in mosque and offer prayers. It is a nine day long festival and at the end of the festival, there is a big feast with biryani, kebabs and phirnis.

Urs

Urs is a festival celebrated in honour of the saints who passed away commemorating their death anniversaries. Even the Hindus and Sikhs participate in this festival and restrain from Non-vegetarian food and alcohol. It is one of the few festivals where one can witness communal harmony in Srinagar.

Ramzan

Ramzan is the fasting month for muslims, in which they pray in mosque and read the Holy Quran. The festival is celebrated with big fanfare and is concluded with a feast and celebration on last day known as, Eid-ul-Fitr

Khir Bhawani Festival

Goddess Khir Bhawani or Goddess Ragnaya is symbolised with a spring in Tulla Mulla and is considered to be the presiding deity of Kashmiri Pundits. Every year in May, this festival is celebrated where people offer milk and khir (sweet dish) to this spring.

Gurez Festival

 Celebrated in the month of July every year by Gurez Tribe in Srinagar, Gurez Festival is celebrated with showcasing folk dance of the tribe and organising a white water rafting competition. The competition is held in the Kishenganga River.

Shopping Area

Badshah Chowk

Badshah Chowk is famous for Srinagar Carpets which has intricate and exquisite pattern and design. It is filled with shops having Pashmina, shawls, embroidered clothes, etc. tourists can place order on the basis of their design request too.

Residency Road

Two things at residency road just make it strikingly different from the rest of the places, fresh dry fruits and Dongra Jewelry. One can find fresh apricots, raisins, figs and walnuts in this area. The Dongra jewellery is found in abundance in this place and one can easily bargain their way through.

Polo View Market

Polo View Market is famous for wooden work and carved wooden furniture and decorative pieces. Tourists can find Jamwars, wooden carved articles, and papier-mâché products in various sizes, shapes and colours.

Lal Chawk

Lal Chawk is another place in Srinagar famous for Wood Work items. Tourists find various items made of walnut wood in different shapes, carvings, sizes, etc. There is a wild range of traditional Kashmiri paintings. For people who love to collect art works and art forms, Lal Chawk is a must-visit place.
