Lahaul & Spiti

It is approximately 1/4th of Himachal Pradesh; the Lahaul & Spiti District is stunningly beautiful. The famous poet Rudyard Kipling noted that Spiti was “A world within a world” and it was “a place where Gods live”. Located at an altitude of 3,340 m, it is the perfect location for nature lovers & trekkers both.

Both Lahaul and Spiti are two isolated Himalayan valleys that lie on the Indo-Tibet border. Lahaul is characterized by its captivating Buddhist Art & Culture and inflicting mountains & glaciers whereas Spiti is known for its vegetation, climate and landscape resembling Tibet. No doubt, Spiti is also known as “Little Tibet”.

Lahaul is blessed by nature and nurtured by rivers Chandra & Bhaga, while Spiti is a live museum with breathtaking trekking routes, valleys and monasteries that captivate tourists. Spiti, known as ‘Land of the Lamas’ and the Tabo Monastery is UNESCO World Heritage Site, including scriptures and wall paintings like Tankhas & Stucco.

The fairs & festivals celebrated here are Pauri fair, Ladarcha fair, Tsheshu fair, Tribal fair, Fagli festival, Gochi festival and Festival of light. A number of must see temples: Trilokinath temple & Mrikula Devi temple. Plenty of Monasteries like Tabo Monastery, Kungri Gompa, Guru Ghantal Gompa, Yang Yud Gompa, Sashur Gompa, Gemur Monastery, Dhankar Monastery, Kardang Gompa, etc make up the list.

Some great places like Chandra Tal, Suraj Tal & Dashir Lakes, which every tourist wants to revisit. Also a wildlife park – Pin Valley National Park attracts tourists, which has a huge variety of rare animals like Wooly Hare, Tibetan Gazelle and Snow Leopard.

How to reach

Best Time to Visit

Late May to late September.

Spiti is literally off bounds from October to May. Only from late May to late September is considered the best time to visit Spiti. As days warm up, the accumulated snow melts and paves way for the roads to clear up leading to the valley. This happens even on the Shimla-Kinnaur route. Hotels just start to come out of hibernation and things starts to arrive in Spiti Valley on frequent basis. If you are interested in watching snow studded peaks, want to play in snow then this is the ideal time to be in Spiti Valley.
